Generation Girl equips young women with hard and soft skills to become future female leaders through STEM-based programmes

In Indonesia, the representation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) remains critically low, especially at leadership levels. Cultural norms, limited access to quality education, and the scarcity of female role models perpetuate this gender gap, leaving many young women without the skills or confidence to pursue careers in these fields. The lack of diversity in STEM hinders innovation and restricts the nation's economic potential. This disparity highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to inspire and equip Indonesia's next generation of female leaders.

Generation Girl, an Indonesian non-profit organisation founded by Anbita Nadine Siregar, is addressing this challenge head-on. The organisation is dedicated to empowering young women aged 13 to 30 by providing them with essential technical and soft skills needed to thrive in the STEM industry. Through workshops, mentorship programs, and hands-on learning experiences, Generation Girl creates a supportive environment where young women can explore their interests, develop their talents, and build the confidence to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Since its inception in 2018, Generation Girl has reached over 60,000 young women across all 34 provinces in Indonesia, offering more than 2,000 hours of programming. These efforts have equipped participants with valuable skills and fostered a sense of community and belonging among aspiring female STEM professionals. By focusing on young women from underrepresented communities, Generation Girl ensures that those who need support get the tools to succeed.

Over the next five years, Generation Girl aims to increase female participation in STEM by 10% at both the university and career levels to significantly boost the number of female leaders in Indonesia's STEM sector.

Programme support

Through the Dela programme, we'll support Generation Girl in securing sustainable funding, optimising its resources, and continuing to develop innovative solutions to empower even more young women. We look forward to supporting the team as they build a future where women are equally represented in STEM, leading the way in innovation and driving Indonesia's progress on the global stage.
