Sabah is a Malaysian state on the island of Borneo known for its rich rainforests, marine biodiversity and home to many Indigenous communities. Every year, large amounts of wood are discarded, meaning that valuable materials end up as waste. At the same time, many young people struggle to find meaningful work, practical skills training, and clear career opportunities.
Founded in 2020, Benua Brutti works to transform reclaimed pallet wood and discarded wood offcuts into bespoke furniture, cabinetry, and interior installations for homes and businesses. Guided by its mission, Karya Anak Bangsa (the work of the nation's children), the organisation is reviving traditional artisan craftsmanship, creating products that are beautiful, functional, and environmentally responsible.
At the heart of Benua Brutti's work is its commitment to people. The organisation creates employment and learning opportunities for young people, fresh graduates, and individuals from underserved communities. Team members are employed as artisans and receive hands-on training, coaching, and opportunities to grow into leadership and specialist roles. Several former team members have gone on to pursue university and master's level education after building stability and confidence through their experience with the organisation.
Since its founding, Benua Brutti has impacted 39 beneficiaries through employment and skills development opportunities. It has also diverted more than 57 tonnes of pallet wood from waste streams, equivalent to saving around 600 trees. Beyond its workshop, the organisation extends its impact through the BaikiHero Project, which shares repair and practical skills with rural youth in Kota Marudu.
The organisation also takes pride in developing future leaders from within. Team members who joined as interns have progressed into key roles across sales, stakeholder engagement, operations, and impact measurement, reflecting Benua Brutti's belief in long-term talent development.
Looking ahead, Benua Brutti aims to expand beyond Sabah, strengthen its impact measurement practices, build its skills development programmes, and grow into a nationally recognised social enterprise while continuing to champion sustainable materials and artisan craftsmanship.

Through the Social Enterprise Accelerator Malaysia (SEAM), we’ll support Benua Brutti in strengthening its organisational systems, developing leadership capacity, improving impact measurement, and exploring ways to scale beyond its local market.
