Many women in these communities face challenges securing stable employment due to factors such as limited work experience, language barriers or family responsibilities. At the same time, affordable and convenient plant-based food choices are not always easy to find, despite increasing interest in healthier and more environmentally responsible diets.
Based in Penang, Dodo Vegan Hut is a women-owned social enterprise that produces Halal-certified plant-based frozen foods and coconut-based desserts for businesses and consumers. Its range includes products such as burgers, falafel and the SAKRAE coconut ice cream brand, offering convenient food choices that are both nutritious and sustainable. By sourcing ingredients from local suppliers and farmers, the organisation strengthens local supply chains while promoting a food system with a lower environmental footprint.
Creating inclusive employment opportunities is at the heart of the organisation’s work. Dodo Vegan Hut recruits, trains and employs women from underserved backgrounds, providing practical experience in production, quality assurance, Halal compliance and business operations. Flexible part-time roles are also available for single mothers. Over the past four years, the organisation has engaged 18 women, including 16 from lower-income communities, enabling them to develop new skills, build confidence and achieve greater financial independence.
The organisation’s impact extends beyond employment. Around 50,000 consumers have been reached with healthier food alternatives, encouraging more sustainable eating habits. Dodo Vegan Hut also operates a made-to-order production model and uses frozen-food technology to reduce food waste. Around 50% of its packaging is now eco-friendly, and production is powered by fully electric cooking equipment.
Founded by Mani, whose hands-on approach is guided by the philosophy of “learning by doing and doing by learning”, Dodo Vegan Hut has grown steadily despite the challenges of introducing plant-based products to mainstream markets. The success of its SAKRAE coconut ice cream and growing demand for products such as falafel show that more consumers are embracing sustainable food choices.
Looking ahead, Dodo Vegan Hut aims to expand production capacity, create more employment opportunities for women, strengthen partnerships with hospitals, hotels and retailers, and bring its products to more communities across Malaysia and beyond. As the organisation grows, it seeks to demonstrate that healthier food, environmental responsibility and inclusive employment can go hand in hand.
Programme support
Dodo Vegan Hut participated in the Social Enterprise Accelerator Malaysia (SEAM) programme to strengthen its approach to business growth and impact. Through mentorship, networking opportunities and practical guidance, the programme supports the organisation in expanding market access, building partnerships and developing a more structured pathway for scaling its inclusive employment model and sustainable food business.
