Reduces food waste in Taiwan by helping small farmers turn surplus ingredients into value-added foods and providing age-inclusive employment.

In Taiwan, many small farmers struggle to sell their high-quality ingredients. These products often go unsold because they are produced in small amounts, do not meet strict standards, or cannot be processed in factories that require large orders. This means that good local produce is often wasted before it ever reaches consumers.

At the same time, factories in Taiwan need more workers, but many older people find it hard to keep working even though they have valuable skills and experience.

Goofoo, founded in Tainan in 2016, connects local producers, consumers, and workers by making additive-free foods. The company turns local ingredients into popular foods like dumplings, meatballs, and hamburger patties, all made without preservatives, phosphates, or MSG. Goofoo also helps small farmers turn unused ingredients into products ready for the market, offering support with recipes, small-batch production, packaging, and finding places to sell.

Goofoo sees surplus or imperfect ingredients as an opportunity rather than a problem. A farmer with a unique local ingredient but no access to affordable manufacturing can partner with Goofoo to create branded food products and reach new customers. This approach helps reduce waste, creates new income for farmers, and supports local food systems.

The enterprise’s impact goes beyond farming. More than half of its employees are over 50, and the company has made its workplace age-inclusive. Production lines have been redesigned with equipment that reduces heavy lifting, repetitive manual work and physical strain. Flexible hours help employees balance their jobs with family life, so experienced workers can keep working.

Today, about 95% of Goofoo’s ingredients come from local sources, and the company upcycles around 4,100 kg of ingredients each year. Its focus on food quality and new ideas has earned it HACCP and ISO 22000 certifications, along with national awards for food innovation.

Goofoo plans to work with more small farmers, create more farmer-led products, and continue expanding its range of additive-free foods. By focusing on circular food production and inclusive jobs, the enterprise shows that good food can benefit farmers, workers, consumers, and the environment.
