At the same time, families of children with autism often struggle to access consistent support, while schools may lack resources for hands-on sustainability education. Green Shoots was founded to address these connected challenges through a model that links environmental action, inclusive employment and community wellbeing.
Green Shoots creates eco-friendly corporate gifts and hospitality products made from reclaimed and sustainable materials. These products are produced by underserved women, including single mothers and older women, who are offered flexible work opportunities that fit around their family responsibilities. Revenue generated through the business is reinvested into autism support and environmental education programmes. The enterprise also works with schools to create nature-based learning environments, sensory gardens and sustainability learning experiences.
Founded by Themudu, whose own experience raising an autistic child inspired the organisation’s mission, Green Shoots takes a holistic approach to creating positive change. One part of this work involves improving access to Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy. ABA is a therapy approach that uses positive reinforcement and structured learning techniques to support the development of communication, social and everyday life skills.
Since 2021, Green Shoots has employed 12 women from vulnerable groups in production roles, funded more than 100 ABA therapy sessions benefiting approximately 15 to 20 children, and sold 5,620 reclaimed wooden boxes. The organisation has also contributed to reducing more than 2,200 kilograms of plastic waste and supported sustainability learning through programmes active in more than 300 schools.
Looking ahead, Green Shoots aims to expand its partnerships with hotels and businesses, strengthen sustainability training for suppliers, and build a stronger evidence base for measuring impact. The organisation is also focusing on Langkawi, where autism support services are limited, with the ambition of creating a stronger ecosystem of support for children and their families.

Through the programme, Green Shoots will strengthen its impact measurement systems and further develop the evidence behind its social and environmental outcomes. The team will gain access to mentorship, peer learning and strategic guidance that will support sustainable growth, strengthen long-term partnerships and enable the organisation to expand its impact while staying true to its mission.
