Many producers also rely on intermediaries, leaving them with less control over pricing and market opportunities.
Koperasi Penternak Akuakultur Pantai Kundor Kelantan Berhad, known as KoAKUA, was established in 2019 to create stronger opportunities for coastal communities through a cooperative model. Based in Kampung Pulau Kundor, Kelantan, the organisation brings together fishermen and aquaculture farmers so they can share resources, strengthen market access and reach customers collectively.
Today, around 50 cooperative members benefit from this approach. KoAKUA supports members through aquaculture production, knowledge sharing, training and collective marketing. Alongside sustainably farmed seafood, the cooperative has expanded into duck farming and value-added products such as salted duck eggs and smoked duck to create more regular income opportunities throughout the year.
The organisation’s impact reaches several groups. Local fishermen and aquaculture farmers gain access to wider markets and opportunities to increase their earnings. Coastal families benefit from improved food security, while community members can take part in training and livelihood development activities. To date, 10 people have earned additional income through small-scale aquaculture, three people have gained employment through the cooperative, and 47 individuals benefit annually from improved food security and better access to food resources.
KoAKUA has demonstrated resilience and adaptability as it has grown. After facing challenges with large retail buyers, the cooperative shifted towards sales channels that offered faster payments and better returns for members. Its diversification into duck farming has also shown promising results, with demand for salted duck eggs now exceeding production capacity. The cooperative has already trained five people in this area and plans to continue sharing its knowledge.
een recognised among Malaysia’s Top 350 Cooperatives in 2022 and 2023 and became an Accredited Social Enterprise through Malaysia’s Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development (KUSKOP) in 2025. Looking ahead, KoAKUA aims to expand production capacity, strengthen direct market access, develop more value-added products and create further opportunities for rural coastal communities.
Programme support
Through the programme, KoAKUA will strengthen its business development and long-term growth planning. The cooperative will explore ways to build stronger market connections, develop its product branding and expand value-added product lines. It will also enhance technical knowledge, workforce development and sustainable farming practices, enabling the organisation to strengthen its impact and create more opportunities for its members and surrounding communities in the years ahead.
