Turning discarded fishing nets into circular building materials while empowering local communities and reducing environmental risks.

Unmanaged residual waste often pollutes the environment, threatening health, ecosystems, and livelihoods. In Indonesia, hard-to-recycle materials often end up in landfills or the ocean, and some waste, such as discarded fishing nets, doesn’t even have recycling infrastructure.

Rendy Aditya Wachid, founder of Parongpong RAW Lab, aimed to solve this issue by creating innovative solutions through transforming residual waste, especially discarded fishing nets, into circular building materials. By establishing Parongpong RAW Lab, he also aims to process this waste while empowering local communities. Parongpong RAW Lab collaborates with coastal communities, particularly small-scale fishermen and their families who are directly affected by ghost nets and residual waste. Through community-based collection and recycling, Parongpong RAW Lab has been able to provide them with new income opportunities while reducing environmental risks.

To date, Parongpong RAW Lab has engaged more than 85 coastal community members and collaborated with 10 local fishermen cooperatives across Indonesia. They have empowered over 2,400 households through sustainability education and circular economy initiatives. Parongpong RAW Lab has also successfully diverted more than 130 tons of waste and recycled 16 tons of ghost nets. These efforts have avoided 55 tons of CO₂ emissions annually and supported around 300 community-based projects in coastal cities such as Kalibaru, Jakarta, and Denpasar, Bali.

Looking ahead, Parongpong RAW Lab plans to expand its social impact goals in three key areas. First, further reducing marine pollution by scaling up the collection and recycling of discarded fishing nets. Second, creating more income opportunities for coastal communities by expanding their role in the circular value chain. Third, broadening public awareness and education around waste management and circular economy practices to inspire wider community participation.

Programme support

Through the I-SEA Programme with Instellar, we’ll support Parongpong RAW Lab in advancing its three social impacts while providing guidance to strengthen its impact model and integrate social impact into its long-term strategy.

We look forward to supporting Parongpong RAW Lab’s efforts in mitigating environmental impacts and building decentralised circular systems in Indonesia.
