Technology is vital for education, professional growth, and daily life. Yet, in Mexico, access to technology remains a significant challenge, with many people from vulnerable communities still needing the technology necessary for academic and professional purposes. At the same time, Mexico is the third-largest global electronic waste generator.

Rematech tackles these pressing issues, working to foster technological inclusion and reduce electronic waste through reconditioning and redistributing electronic devices. The social enterprise’s innovative approach involves purchasing second-hand laptops, refurbishing and reconditioning them, and selling these high-quality devices at affordable prices through online marketplaces and physical stores in rural and marginalised urban communities. By offering essential digital tools and license-free software, these devices become accessible to those who need them most.

Each purchase comes with a monthly membership, which includes a guarantee service with regular maintenance, extending the lifespan of these devices from an average of 3-4 years to up to 8 years. Remarkably, 17% of Rematech’s customers are first-time computer owners, and for 68%, Rematech is their only affordable option. This model not only makes technology accessible but also promotes sustainability by reducing e-waste.

Rematech’s commitment to addressing the digital gap is driven by co-founder Carlos, having experienced both privileged access to technology in private schooling and the stark contrast of a technologically marginalised neighbourhood.
