Mainstream tourism can leave communities with low and unreliable income, while putting extra pressure on local nature. Without good market access and support, community-led tourism has a hard time reaching travellers in Mexico and beyond and growing in ways that benefit both people and the environment.
Rutopía is a digital platform that connects travellers with community-led, sustainable experiences and unique places to stay in rural Mexico. It curates trips and supports local cooperatives and small businesses with practical know-how and technology, helping them reach more travellers and wider markets. Rutopía earns money through service fees on bookings. The idea is simple: tourism that helps communities earn more, create decent jobs and strengthen incentives to protect and regenerate local land and culture.
In 2025, Rutopía helped create income opportunities for over 6,000 people in rural and Indigenous communities by enabling trips to be booked on its platform. This support often extends to families and neighbours as well. Rutopía is also Mexico’s first B Corp-certified tourism company, demonstrating its commitment to high standards for people, the planet, and transparency.
Rutopía aims to attract more international travelers and, in the future, expand its community and regenerative tourism model to other countries in Latin America. As the company grows, it is focusing on clearer processes and better technology, so it can expand without losing what is most important to the communities it serves.
Programme support
With support from the Mexico Accelerator Programme, Rutopía is building the foundations for responsible growth, clearer processes, and stronger reporting and leadership for the next phase. We look forward to working together to help more communities benefit from tourism that supports nature, culture, and decent livelihoods.
