Liberty Society commercialises stylish fashion items to give back hope and dignity to women refugees and artisans facing poverty and violence

Liberty Society is a women-led social enterprise founded to change the desperate situation faced by many women, especially refugees from the Middle East and Africa. Living off development funds that are barely enough to support their families and sometimes victims to slavery, these women find themselves in a vicious circle of hopelessness and extreme poverty.

The social enterprise commercialises high-quality, eco-friendly fashion and accessories produced by refugees, women victims of violence and disabled communities. Selling mainly to socially driven companies, the founders aim to inspire wearers with their stylish designs, the stories told about the women who produce them, and the causes supported.

Every purchase made at Liberty Society contributes to their House of Freedom in the Serpong district. Here, women find a community of support and receive skills training to find decent jobs. They also get assistance to access the market with their fashion products. All this enables the women to grow their confidence and get their dignity back. They increase their socioeconomic well-being, raising their income and improving the living conditions of their families.

With its training-to-employment model, Liberty Society has educated over eighty refugees since 2019, most of them women. Their goal is to empower a thousand artisans in ten different regions across Indonesia through training, storytelling and marketing of their crafts.

Programme support:

The accelerator will enable Liberty Society to improve their product curation and quality control processes. They will work to expand their business to business market outside Java, where their main operations are located now. To do so, the programme will support their marketing and storytelling skills so they can connect with more clients.

Another area where Liberty Society will use the mentoring offered by IKEA co-workers and Instellar experts is people management with a focus on diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

We are happy to participate in this accelerator and be surrounded by passionate, energetic and visionary enterprises. It is a pleasure to be all growing together with the IKEA global team towards the same goal!
