Almaquieta empowers Mexican coffee and ginger farmers through fair trade and sustainable practices, ensuring economic stability and environmental preservation.

In the Mexican countryside, labour practices often favour big companies and intermediaries, leaving farmers and local producers at a disadvantage. These farmers face unstable crop prices, which are typically too low to improve their livelihoods. Additionally, current consumption and production models contribute to environmental degradation, particularly soil erosion.

Almaquieta addresses these issues by forging direct, equitable business relationships with coffee and ginger farming communities. The cooperative establishes formal, trustworthy business relationships with coffee and ginger producers and commits to purchasing set volumes of crops annually at fixed fair prices, adhering to a no-haggling policy and providing monthly payments.

It also supports farmers in adopting sustainable practices, ensuring their lands remain productive and environmentally sound. By doing so, Almaquieta ensures financial stability for farmers and promotes environmentally responsible farming methods.

Almaquieta also produces cold brew coffee and ginger beer as healthy, non-alcoholic alternatives to conventional coffee and soft drinks. Its products are developed by a food chemist and cater to health-conscious individuals mindful of their environmental impact.

Almaquieta operates as a cooperative society with six partners, each bringing unique expertise in business, communications, food chemistry, legal matters, and agriculture. Their diverse backgrounds and skills contribute to the cooperative's development and strategic growth.

Programme support

Almaquieta has a clear vision, is poised for growth, and is ready to make a lasting positive impact on the communities we serve. As part of the Mexico Accelerator Programme, we'll support the cooperative in developing a more structured theory of change and provide technical assistance in organisational management, especially in collective leadership. We're excited to support Almaquieta's journey towards sustainability and equity in agriculture.
