Historically, the Tseltals, one of the indigenous groups native to Chiapas, have faced precarious living conditions and exploitation by larger coffee producers. For this reason, Bats’il Maya was born as a cooperative in 1993 to protect the interest of the local coffee producers. Today, the organisation is a social enterprise that fosters synergies among multiple organisations and advocates for better living conditions.
Bats'il Maya also connects final consumers with the producing Tseltal families, who roast, market and make direct organic coffee sales of the highest quality. In this way, the organisation secures fair prices benefiting more than 890 people in 58 communities.
Their fair-trade model guarantees decent income and supports young people, especially women, to expand their self-employment opportunities.
Programme support
Through the Mexico Acceleration Programme with New Ventures, we’ll support Bats’il Maya with advice and tools to optimise their value chain — from production to coffee marketing, improve their organisational structure and increase their presence in the coffee market.
We look forward to supporting the Bats’il Maya team in strengthening their business model, and with that, increase the positive impact for the Tseltal communities in Chiapas.
