Turns everyday food shopping into a way to support eco-friendly farmers and strengthen local food systems in Taiwan.

Climate change, rising costs and market uncertainty are making it harder for small-scale farmers to keep up eco-friendly practices. On the other side, many of us want to make more sustainable food choices, but it’s not always easy to see the real impact of what we buy. When there’s no clear link between our everyday shopping and the environment, sustainable choices can feel a bit out of reach.

Founded in Taiwan in 2014, Buy Direct from Farmers is a social enterprise that reconnects people with the growers behind their food. Through their digital platform, you can buy traceable, locally produced food straight from more than 250 eco-friendly, organic family farms. By bringing together technology, food education and a focus on sustainability, they’re building a food system that’s more open and fair for farmers, consumers and the planet.

Farmers get access to digital sales channels, marketing, logistics and a handy Farm Helper app that makes managing orders and shipments much simpler. For shoppers, Buy Direct from Farmers shares over 1,000 recipes, stories and insights about food and farming every year, making it easier to see where your food comes from and why local production matters for the environment. They’re also working on new tools so you’ll soon be able to see the sustainability and carbon impact of your purchases as you shop.

The organisation’s impact reaches several groups. Over 250 farming households now have more stable market access and income opportunities through the platform. The network has grown to include more than 118,000 members and over 200 corporate partners committed to sustainable sourcing. Since 2022, its food donation programmes have reached around 43,130 people each year, thanks to partnerships with social welfare organisations. On the environmental side, they’ve supported the restoration of more than 4,478 hectares of eco-friendly farmland and cut an estimated 267 tonnes of CO₂ through smarter packaging.

Looking ahead, Buy Direct from Farmers plans to expand its sustainability rating system, introduce carbon impact tracking for shoppers and open up even more opportunities for local farmers to thrive as the climate changes. Inspired by founder Hsin-Yi Chin’s vision to rebuild the bond between farmers and consumers, they’re showing how our everyday food choices really can shape a more sustainable future.

Programme support

Buy Direct from Farmers has joined the IKEA Social Entrepreneurship programme to strengthen its sustainability impact model and accelerate growth. The organisation aims to test and refine its carbon impact tools, learn from peers around the world, build new partnerships and reach even more people with the message that sustainable food choices can make a real difference for people and the planet.
