Coco, a social enterprise based in Monterrey, is tackling the pressing issue of internet connectivity in rural Mexican communities with a unique approach. By installing a 'Coco Box' that utilizes a combination of WiFi technology and satellite connections, Coco is offering affordable internet access to residents, local businesses, and public schools for as little as 5 Mexican pesos (0.3 USD) per hour.
Coco's internet service, provided by satellite technology, offers a range of benefits. It avoids dependence on government or private infrastructure, decreases installation costs, and offers more affordable connectivity. Coco's internet plans range from 0.3 USD for one hour to 6 USD for seven days of unlimited access.
The enterprise empowers local shop owners, who sell the internet plans within their communities, earning commission on each sale. Coco also employs local technicians to promote the service and manage installations, fostering job creation and economic development within the communities.
Programme support
Since it started in 2020, Coco has connected over 50 communities. Now, the enterprise aims to strengthen its franchise model to extend services to new regions in Mexico and other Latin American countries. During its time in the Mexico Accelerator Programme, we'll support Coco in scaling through mentorship, strategic guidance, and access to corporate networks to achieve its ambitious expansion goals.
We look forward to being part of Coco's mission to bridge the digital divide and empower rural communities in Mexico and beyond.
