Social enterprises driving global change on World Food Day

Every year on 16 October, World Food Day highlights important topics such as food waste, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and the challenges faced by fishing communities — all in an effort to combat climate change. This year's theme is "Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future”. It's the perfect opportunity for us to shine a spotlight on the incredible efforts of social entrepreneurs, who are making everyday life better for so many people and how they're creating a more sustainable and inclusive world.

Music has the power to unite people regardless of ability. However, not everyone is able or confident to play an instrument, whether due to skill level, cognitive barriers, or a lack of accessible musical instruments.

Funki, a Swedish social enterprise specialising in handcrafted musical instruments, strives to make music accessible to everyone. They’ve also developed a simple, engaging web application that lets anyone select sounds from a library of instruments, enabling meaningful, creative musical experiences where people can collaborate and create music together. Their innovative technology and specially designed instruments make playing easier, allowing everyone to participate and contribute to composing a song.

The idea behind Funki is that the instruments should make it possible to play together with anyone, even with someone playing a traditional instrument. Everyone participating should be able to play at their own level, and it should still sound good together. Funki builds inclusion by making group music-playing accessible, where all people can play together regardless of ability level.

Currently, Funki collaborates with adapted schools for students with intellectual disabilities, as well as cultural schools that offer music, theatre, and other creative education for students with special needs across Sweden, from Åre in the north to Kalmar in the south. Their reach has also expanded beyond Sweden, including partnerships with a cultural school near Stavanger, Norway, and two Music Hubs in England. In addition, they seek to collaborate with LSS (Lagen om stöd och service till vissa funktionshindrade), a publicly funded service in Sweden that provides support and services for people with disabilities. Through this collaboration, Funki intends to offer participants meaningful activities and new opportunities for social interaction, learning, and personal development.

By involving individuals with intellectual or other cognitive disabilities in their activities and design processes, Funki strives to create long-term, sustainable inclusion. Through their initiatives, they also aim to promote social inclusion, encourage learning, and provide a fun way for people to connect and interact through music. 

Programme Support

Through the Everyone’s Business programme with Reach for Change, we’ll support Funki in scaling sales, strengthening long-term financial stability, and improving operational processes as the organisation grows, while maintaining close engagement with its users. We look forward to supporting Funki in building a platform where everyone, regardless of intellectual or cognitive ability, can experience the joy of making music.
