Institut F was founded by Asmaa Ibnouzahir in 2017 to address these challenges. The organisation empowers Muslim women and girls in Québec by helping them reconcile their identities and assert their place in both their cultural communities and the broader society.
Through workshops, advocacy, and support networks, Institut F equips these women with the tools they need to thrive—whether by developing soft skills, building confidence, or engaging in leadership and decision-making roles. The goal is not just integration but the cultivation of a strong, multifaceted identity that allows Muslim women to contribute positively to society while honouring their cultural and religious backgrounds.
Since it started, Institut F has made significant strides in fostering change. On an individual level, many women have reported newfound confidence and skills that have enabled them to secure better positions in various settings, from workplaces to community organisations. This empowerment has also led to greater representation of Muslim women in decision-making spaces, helping to challenge stereotypes and influence policy from within.
At the community level, Institut F has successfully facilitated the creation of robust support networks among women, where they can share experiences and strategies for overcoming challenges. Additionally, the organisation has opened up crucial dialogues about sexual stereotypes within Muslim communities, approaching these discussions from an antisexist yet culturally sensitive perspective. Through its dedicated efforts, Institut F is not just empowering individuals; it is helping to reshape the cultural and social landscape of Québec, making it more inclusive and equitable for all.
