Kwara modernises the traditional Mexican footwear “huarache” by making it more comfortable, sustainable and offering fair employment to local manufacturers.

“Huaraches” is a traditional style of shoes from Mexico that are like sandals. This type of shoes has been manufactured and used for centuries in multiple parts of the country but with time, they have lost popularity affecting the income of families that have produced them for decades.

Kwara is a social enterprise that wants to revitalise this traditional footwear by making it more comfortable, stylish, and sustainable. At the same time, they work with more than a hundred Mexican artisans in Michoacán, Mexico; giving them decent working conditions and fair salaries. These families still employ traditional techniques, and the design of each pair is unique.

To sell the production, Kwara has a network of more than fifteen distributors that sell the footwear directly to customers. They can offer a differentiated product to customers with higher value: better quality, design, comfort, and more importantly, sustainable and fairly paid.

Kwara is trying to increase the demand of huaraches as it offers a new version of this traditional footwear with more quality and style while preserving the heritage. This social enterprise merges the artisanal design of huaraches with modern technology and materials to offer a more comfortable and durable product.
