The prison system does little to help people return to society. Women in prison rarely get the chance to earn a fair income or learn skills for life after release. With limited work, ongoing stigma, and little support, starting over is hard, and the cycle of exclusion often continues.
La Cana is a social enterprise that creates decent, paid work for women in prison. Inside the prisons, La Cana teaches craft skills like crochet, screen printing, and macramé. The women’s products are sold online, at markets, and through partnerships with companies.
The idea is straightforward: selling more products means more women can earn money, learn skills, and get ready for life after prison. They also provide legal support and continue to support women after they are released, making their return to society safer.
The enterprise has supported over 1,700 women in prison or recently released. The income they earn helps them support their families, regain confidence, and learn practical skills for future jobs.
La Cana plans to expand its model to more prisons across Mexico through a social franchise approach. By improving daily operations and building more partnerships, it hopes to reach more women, build a stronger business, and help turn prisons into places of opportunity rather than exclusion.
Programme support
With support from the Mexico Accelerator Programme, La Cana is working to improve its business model, become more financially stable, and prepare to grow responsibly. We look forward to working together to help more women earn money, learn skills, and feel ready for life after prison.
