Matmissionen is a social grocery store chain that helps reduce food waste, fights food poverty, and supports people on their way to self-sufficiency.

Food poverty is becoming a bigger issue in Sweden, with more people unable to afford a healthy and varied diet. Those living at or below the Social Insurance Agency’s minimum level often struggle to cover basic needs and feel stressed about buying food, especially nutritious options like fresh fruit and vegetables. Meanwhile, a lot of edible food goes to waste, and the grocery industry does not have a single, professional group to manage large-scale surplus food donations. Many people who are far from the job market also face challenges finding work and becoming self-sufficient.

Matmissionen tackles these problems by cutting food waste and helping to ease food poverty. The chain of social grocery stores gives people in tough financial situations access to affordable food and supports them in working towards self-sufficiency.

With a membership, people living at or below the guaranteed income level can buy good quality food for about a third of the usual grocery store price. Matmissionen partners with the grocery industry to collect surplus food and also provides job opportunities and support for people who have trouble finding work.

Today, Matmissionen has 18 stores in 12 locations across Sweden, supported by regional warehouses, and serves about 30,000 members each year. The model, started ten years ago, has shown it works. Seven out of ten members say they feel less stressed about buying food and can eat more fruits and vegetables.

Matmissionen’s long-term goal is to make itself unnecessary. While it helps people today, the organisation also wants to draw attention to food poverty as a growing problem in Sweden, one that requires political action to ensure everyone can have a decent standard of living.

Programme support

Through this programme, we’ll support Matmissionen in developing new ideas and provide strategic advice as they expand across Sweden.  We look forward to supporting them as they build a clear and lasting legal and governance structure and strengthen their organisation for long-term impact.
