Empowering women working with natural fibres for Indonesia’s traditional handwoven textiles, ensuring fair income, sustainable livelihoods, and cultural preservation.

In Indonesia, traditional handwoven textiles are at risk of disappearing due to low interest, as many consider them outdated. Limited market access, few economic opportunities for female artisans, and declining interest in weaving among the younger generation also add to this risk.

Rumah Tenun Magelang was founded to preserve and promote traditional handwoven textiles in Indonesia. They produce handwoven textiles made from natural fibres, including pandan, water hyacinth, banana, flax, and other plants. Noor, CEO of Rumah Tenun Magelang, believes that combining traditional techniques with modern design is key to preserving culture for future generations. The enterprise focuses on empowering women in rural communities through skills development, ensuring fair income, sustainable livelihoods, and cultural recognition.

Over 23 years, Rumah Tenun Magelang has successfully empowered over 1,000 women working with natural fibres. The enterprise works closely with raw material suppliers across Indonesia, from North Sumatra to North Sulawesi to ensure and maintain high quality standards. Their woven products have reached international markets and are warmly received, thanks to their commitment to preserving cultural heritage, promoting environmental sustainability, and empowering vulnerable groups.

As Rumah Tenun Magelang grows, they plan to strengthen three key social impacts: providing more economic opportunities for women artisans, expanding raw material suppliers across Indonesia to create a more sustainable and inclusive supply chain, and promoting Indonesia’s handwoven products globally while highlighting the country’s cultural heritage.

Programme Support

Through the I-SEA Programme with Instellar, we’ll support Rumah Tenun Magelang in advancing their three key social impact plans by providing business support, networking opportunities, and resources to develop their business.

We also look forward to supporting them in creating a sustainable craft ecosystem where cultural heritage is preserved and local communities can achieve economic resilience and recognition.
