Connects eco-friendly farmers with communities in need, creating a food system that benefits people and nature across Taiwan.

In Taiwan, good food and good intentions do not always reach the people and places that need them most. Eco-friendly farmers often struggle to find stable markets for their crops, while vulnerable families face barriers to accessing healthy food. Meanwhile, farmland biodiversity is facing new threats.

The Taiwan Good Rice Circle Association is working to solve these problems in ways that help people, farmers, and nature.

Founded in 2022, the Taiwan Good Rice Circle Association is building a new kind of food system that links farmers, communities, businesses, and nature. With its “Good Rice Cycle” model, the group buys eco-friendly and surplus crops from smallholder farmers and sends them to social welfare groups. This way, good food goes to people who need it instead of going to waste.

The organisation works with farmers across Taiwan who grow rice and other crops using environmentally friendly methods. It has supported over 110 farmers to improve their livelihoods through guaranteed prices and business partnerships. It has also provided healthy food to over 30,000 people in need through 93 social welfare groups. In addition, 350 children have joined 150 food and farming education sessions, learning about where their food comes from and how sustainable farming supports both people and the environment.

A key part of the model is its focus on biodiversity. Instead of relying on others, the Taiwan Good Rice Circle trains farmers to become “field eco-observers.” With digital tools, these farmers track wildlife and check the health of their land. So far, the group has gathered almost 3,000 records about biodiversity and found protected and native species living on farms. These actions are turning farms into ecological corridors that link habitats throughout Taiwan.

The Taiwan Good Rice Circle Association aims to expand its biodiversity monitoring network, engage more farmers in conservation, improve food security programmes, and create Taiwan’s first farmer-led biodiversity database that meets global sustainability standards.

Programme support

Through JIABA, we’ll support the Taiwan Good Rice Circle Association in strengthening its digital transformation, streamlining its operations, and developing talent as it continues to scale its nationwide network of farmers, corporate partners, and social welfare organisations. We look forward to supporting them as they work towards a future where every purchase helps farms thrive, and everyone has fair access to good food.
