Social enterprises driving global change on World Food Day

Every year on 16 October, World Food Day highlights important topics such as food waste, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and the challenges faced by fishing communities — all in an effort to combat climate change. This year's theme is "Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future”. It's the perfect opportunity for us to shine a spotlight on the incredible efforts of social entrepreneurs, who are making everyday life better for so many people and how they're creating a more sustainable and inclusive world.

Ubud Raw Chocolate & Cacao, based in Bali, Indonesia, creates healthy chocolate from unroasted, fermented Indonesian cacao beans and coconut, with no additives or preservatives. Their mission is to produce chocolate that is not only delicious and nutritious but also empowers local farmers by providing fair and consistent income through direct partnerships and above-market pricing. Aware of the plastic waste associated with production and packaging, the enterprise supports initiatives that improve plastic waste collection and recovery in local communities.

Over 10 years, Ubud Raw Chocolate & Cacao has successfully expanded their impact by collaborating with local farmers across various regions in Indonesia, including Bali, South Sumatra, East Kalimantan, and Papua. In its efforts to reduce plastic waste, the enterprise partners with waste-management organisations and local initiatives focused on plastic collection and recovery in Bali. Over the last three years, they've achieved a recycling-to-output ratio of 144%.

The enterprise aims to create additional jobs and opportunities for local communities, strengthen support for farmers through long-term partnerships, and expand its initiatives to reduce plastic waste.
