Tarunira transforms Bali by empowering locals through sustainable palmyra palm products, providing jobs, and combating urbanisation.

Karangasem, one of the regions on Bali Island, is the most densely populated area of palmyra palm trees in Indonesia.

However, many local communities have not yet managed to tap into this resource effectively due to a lack of guidance and support to improve their skills. They eventually choose to leave their homes for job opportunities in big cities.

Tarunira is a local social enterprise that addresses the challenge of urbanisation through sustainable agriculture. The company transforms the abundant palmyra palm tree into organic palmyra sugar products. It provides decent work and a stable monthly income to farmers, women, and youth in the villages of Karangasem.

To date, Tarunira has positively impacted people in four villages, optimising hundreds of Palmyra palm trees. The result? Two sustainable, organic palmyra sugar variants – granulated and liquid – are now available on the shelves of over 100 supermarkets, speciality stores, and minimarkets across Bali and Indonesia.

Tarunira is founded and led by I Komang Sukarma's, whose journey from village to higher education and back shows his commitment to his roots. With a 12-year background in making organic palmyra sugar, he founded Tarunira to empower his fellow villagers and positively impact the island of Bali.

Programme support

During its participation in I-SEA, we'll support Tarunira in refining its business model and developing plans to scale the company to other villages. We'll also provide guidance on sales and marketing strategies as it hopes to find new stores to partner with. We look forward to being part of Tarunira's journey.
