Ecoguerreros reduces deforestation and promotes opportunities in Mayan communities through regenerative tourism

The rapid loss and fragmentation of natural ecosystems are alarming, with a forest area equivalent to a soccer field disappearing every six seconds. This environmental degradation is exacerbated by a lack of opportunities in rural areas, forcing indigenous communities to migrate to cities. These areas suffer from unsustainable management, leading to a significant loss of biodiversity and vital environmental services.

Ecoguerreros, a social enterprise based in Mérida, is dedicated to reversing this trend by fostering sustainable tourism and promoting a respectful connection with the environment and local Mayan communities. The enterprise is working to create economic opportunities for these communities, encouraging them to stay and thrive in their ancestral lands while actively participating in conservation efforts.

Ecoguerreros has developed the first Grand Tour Trail in Mexico, connecting 14 Mayan communities through ancient jungle paths in the Yucatán Peninsula. This 100km trail, the Camino del Mayab, guides travellers through natural areas transformed into voluntary ecological reserves.
Their tours offer more than a conventional travel experience. Visitors can experience the rich traditions of the Mayan people and contribute to the preservation and appreciation of biocultural heritage.

The 14 Mayan communities benefit economically by providing services such as tour guides, food, and accommodation. Each community earns rent based on the number of visitors, which supports conservation efforts or community projects like public libraries and infrastructure. Of the total tour fees, 80% goes directly to the communities, significantly impacting local development.

Additionally, Ecoguerreros provides technical assistance to volunteers and companies to manage projects that strengthen regional capabilities. We collaborate closely with community leaders to plan budgets, distribute income, and approve initiatives.

By preserving the region's biodiversity and environmental services, the enterprise ensures that both nature and local cultures flourish.

Alberto and Andrés, co-founders and brothers, were born and raised in the Yucatán Peninsula. Their deep connection to the cultural heritage of the Mayan communities and the region's biodiversity inspired them to start Ecoguerreros. With backgrounds in biology and finance, they transitioned from an ecotourism project to a sustainable business model. Andrés sums up their passion for their social mission: "You cannot preserve what you do not love, and you cannot love what you do not know."

Programme support

Ecoguerreros has built solid relationships with communities, and now its team seeks to enhance their managerial and business capabilities to ensure robust growth and transfer valuable knowledge to local enterprises. Through the Mexico Accelerator Programme, we'll support Ecoguerreros in accessing resources, knowledge, and support networks essential for expanding its impact. We look forward to supporting Ecoguerreros as they connect people, nature, and culture while preserving the precious ecosystems and heritage of the Yucatán Peninsula.
